Lettuce recall: Dr. Sanjay Gupta digs deeper

CNN Television
CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta interviews Marler following the Freshway Foods romaine lettuce E. coli O145 outbreak that sickened at least 23 people in four states. Freshway Foods of Sidney, Ohio voluntarily recalled its products. The lettuce was sold to wholesalers, food service outlets, delis and salad bars—no E. coli found in bagged lettuce sold in grocery stores. Representing a client in new lawsuit against Freshway, he explains his concern: "This particular outbreak is E. coli O145 just as deadly as the E. coli we hear about a lot, the O157:H7. One of the big concerns is that we are seeing a new bug coming after us in the marketplace." He notes this is the first leafy green outbreak traced to Arizona. Asked about improvements, he acknowledges "many parts of the industry have done a remarkable job" and outbreaks are smaller—no longer seeing 200-250 sickened. "We still see three or four sometimes five spinach or lettuce outbreaks yearly, and they are much smaller."
